Principal Investigator

Georg Hansmann, MD, PhD, is Staff Pediatric Cardiologist, Physician Scientist, and Director of the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Program, in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology and Critical Care at Hannover Medical School, Germany. Dr. Hansmann is one of three staff cardiologists working in the pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory. He is principal investigator and group leader of a basic and translational research laboratory focusing on pulmonary vascular disease, right ventricular dysfunction and congenital heart disease. Dr. Hansmann is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Hannover Medical School (tenured). Previously, Georg held faculty positions at the Charité Medical Center Berlin and at Harvard Medical School, Boston. Since February 2013, he is also Visiting Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Hansmann graduated from Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany, and persued clinical training in Medicine (2000-2001) and Pediatrics (2001-2004, 2006-2011) at Charité University Medical Center, Berlin, at the German Heart Center/Technical University Munich, at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF; 2006-2008), and in the Department of Cardiology at Children’s Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School (2008-2011). He is board certified in Pediatrics (US, GER), Pediatric Cardiology (US, GER), Pediatric Critical Care (GER) and Neonatology (GER).

Georg conducted his experimental thesis on vascular P2 (extracellular nucleotide) receptors with Klaus Starke at the Department of Pharmacology in Freiburg, Germany (1995-1999). His thesis (“summa cum laude”) was awarded with the Albrecht Fleckenstein Prize in 1999. Subsequently, he persued cardiovascular postdoctoral research fellowships at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin (2000-2001, with Rainer Dietz), Stanford (2004-2006, with Marlene Rabinovitch) and Harvard University (2011-2012, with Stella Kourembanas).

Dr. Hansmann has received several research awards, including the 2006 Cournand & Comroe Prize in Cardiopulmonary and Critical Care from the American Heart Association, a SPR Research Award in 2008, the 2010 Else Kröner Memorial Award from the German Interdisciplinary Association of Critical Care Medicine (DIVI) for his postdoctoral thesis (Habilitation), and the 2012 Werner Forßmann Prize from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. He was the main scientific organizer of the first Keystone Symposia conference on Pulmonary Vascular Disease and Right Ventricular Dysfunction in Monterey, California (9/2012). Moreover, Dr. Hansmann serves as AHA Writing Group Co-Chair of the first AHA/ATS Joint Guidelines For Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension (2010-present).
